Steven Phelps

Marriage & Family Therapist Associate

Steven is a client-focused therapist who believes that collaborative change in therapy stems from building an awareness of the connection between people's thoughts, emotions, and actions. With a warm and disarming approach that utilizes humor and imagery to make therapy more appealing and approachable, Steven promotes self-compassion and self-understanding, creating a safe space for deepening awareness, emotional vulnerability, and healing.

Steven's therapeutic approach centers on curiosity over judgment and the cultivation of inner peace within each individual. His foundation in systemic thinking helps him encourage his clients to notice and understand relational patterns they have with themselves, others, and the world around them. He draws from several therapeutic models, such as Emotionally Focused Therapy, Mindfulness-Based Cognitive Therapy, Internal Family Systems, and Narrative Therapy. Steven integrates these unique styles using their fundamental common factors that connect them. By doing this, he offers each client a highly personalized experience in the therapy room, curating treatment toward their individualized needs.

Steven studied Creative Writing and Religions & Cultures of Asia in his undergraduate studies at Western Kentucky University. His passion for social justice and love for people led him to the Kent School of Social Work and Behavioral Science at the University of Louisville, where he recently completed his Master’s of Science in Couples and Family Therapy. He has worked with a diverse population of clients in a variety of therapeutic spaces, including Boys and Girls Haven, Iroquois High School, the Brook Hospital, YMCA Camp Piomingo, and private practice. In addition to providing relational therapy to couples and families, he also enjoys working individually with clients. In his free time, Steven loves traveling to new places, sharing art and music, spending time with friends and family, watching Survivor, and exploring nature with his four-legged adventure companion, Wendell.
